The Mission
Together, Arweave and the Decentralised Public Library are on a mission to permanently preserve history, and we need your help. Our goal is to archive vital historical and cultural information on a blockchain - far beyond the reach of censorship, deletion, or alteration. Today, too often online information is accidentally lost, secretly erased, or intentionally altered, eroding the ability of citizens to hold those in power accountable, and hindering our ability to understand what is happening in the world around us.
Arweave is a blockchain-based permanent storage network, and is the backbone of the permaweb. The permaweb provides truly uncensorable preservation of web content. Together with you, our community, we will be harnessing the power of the permaweb to build a truly permanent archive of human history, knowledge, and experience.
So, we are building on the Decentralised Public Librarys recent successful trial-runs, and today were announcing our brand new, official archiving campaign!
In short, we will pay you to archive historical content, current events, international affairs, and all things history in-the-making.
By participating, youll be rewarded while you add to a vast catalogue of permaweb content, which will be permanently available to future generations looking to better understand our world today.
The Archiving Campaign
In short, we will pay you to archive pieces of history!
Whether it is history as we know it today, or even history in-the-making, we need your help to permanently preserve evidence of it.
Recently, we have been trialling a small series of crowd-sourced archiving campaigns within the blockchain and cryptocurrency communities. Its been a fascinating learning experience, and has confirmed to us that crowd-sourcing knowledge collation and exchange is the most effective way forward in creating this permanent archive of human history.
Including crowd-sourcing in knowledge curation efforts offers a range of robust benefits to any archive or library. Importantly, it allows for a very broad range of perspectives, experiences, and demographics (and the consequent diversity of ideas and interests) to be represented in the resultant collections or archives.
Here at the Decentralised Public Library, were a small team striving hard towards an ambitious goal. Crowdsourcing our knowledge curation efforts helps us get much more important information archived than we would be able to without the help of our rapidly-growing archival community.
While helping us achieve our archival goals, we also have the wonderful opportunity to grow a community around archiving history together! To facilitate the growth of this community, we are pleased to introduce the brand new Decentralised Public Library Discord server, so we can all chat together about the pieces of history we are passionate about.
So, we are now launching an ongoing archiving campaign open to all!
The Campaign Rules & Process
The task:Use the Arweave web extension to archive web content relating to world events, international affairs, breaking news, and other web pages and PDFs that are likely to be history-in-the-making.
If youre not sure what to archive, check the FAQs at the bottom of this post.
The Instructions:
- Please read all of the rules to ensure you can receive a reward!
- Install the free Arweave web extension here on Chrome or Brave, or here on Firefox, which is a combined wallet and a web page archiving tool. Learn how to archive web pages with this handy user guide.
- Claim a free Arweave wallet from http://tokens.arweave.org with a token to get started!
- Fill in this Google form to register for the campaign
- Join our Discord server to chat with us and the community, to be the first to receive all updates, get tokens for archiving, and to ask any questions you have!
- Hunt down unique web pages relating to history in-the-making (see the FAQs for more details), and archive them!
- Every day, you must report the archives you wish to be rewarded for in this Google form. The form allows for reporting up to 50 transactions in one report, so if you wish to report more than 50 in one day you should submit another form with the extra transaction IDs. You dont have to submit 50 per day - you can submit fewer if you want.
- Once per day, you must submit one report to this thread containing all archived web pages or PDFs you wish to report that day. See the template report below as an example of a correctly formatted report. Remember, if you are in doubt about what you can & cant archive, check the FAQs below, and send me a DM on our Discord server to arweave-india.
- In your daily reports, you can nominate one of your transaction IDs to win this payout periods contest prize of best submission. We will consider your nominated transaction IDs for the $500 USD best submission prize, alongside others nominations!
- If you run out of tokens, DM arweave-india on our Discord server to request a top up
- Every two weeks we will calculate your per-page rewards and send them to your ETH address.

The Rewards:
Archiving rewards
- There is now a brand new rewards system for this archiving period. For the archiving period beginning 12.01pm CEST Wednesday 7th of August 2019, there will be one large reward pool of $5,000 USD (in ETH) available to community archivers.
- As a participant, you will receive a percentage of the total reward pool, based on what percentage of all valid archives that you personally reported. For example, if there are 5,000 valid pages archived in total for this period, and you personally reported 500 valid transactions, you would receive 10% of the reward pool of $5,000 USD.
- Rewards and contest special prizes will be calculated per two-week payout period, and distributed within one week following the end of the payout period. The USD->ETH peg will be set at 12 noon CEST on the final day of that archival period.
- The first archival period will begin on Saturday the 6th of July 2019, and will end at 11.59pm CEST on Saturday the 20th of July. This means that for payout period 1, the rewards and prizes will be distributed on or before Saturday the 27th of July.
- The second archival period will begin on Sunday the 21st of July 2019, and will end at 11.59am CEST on Wednesday the 7th of August. This means that for payout period 2, the rewards and prizes will be distributed on or before Monday the 12th August 2019.
- The third (and current) archival period begins at 12.01pm CEST on Wednesday the 7th of August 2019. This means that for archival period 3, the rewards and prizes will be distributed on or before the 28th of August 2019.
You can earn rewards by referring fellow passionate archivers to the campaign! If you invite a friend and they successfully receive archiving rewards, you get extra rewards too - an extra $0.10 USD per valid archived page they submit in their first payout period. Make sure they report your wallet address when they sign up to the campaign, as per the rules section.
Contests:
In addition to the per-page archiving rewards, there are also two special prizes on offer each payout period:
- The Editors Pick! Every payout period the core Decentralised Public Library and Arweave teams will pick their favourite archive, and the archiver will receive an additional $500 USD (in ETH) on top of their other rewards. This archive might be the most historically important, the most interesting, or the most creative submission!
- Best Archiver! Every payout period the Decentralised Public Library and Arweave teams will select a winner for the prize of best overall archiver. This person will receive an additional $500 USD (in ETH) on top of their other rewards. This persons archives throughout the payout period have been of consistently high quality, interesting, and from varied sources, and about various events.
The Rules:
For archiving:
- Pay very careful attention to these rules for every page that you archive! We will be checking transactions, and if we find rule-breaking content in your report, all of your transactions for that day will be disqualified.. This means that breaking a rule could have serious consequences, so please take care and feel free to check with the team if youre in doubt about something.
- Dont archive copyright-infringing content. Focus on 'primary source' and original source content (government reports, tweets etc). To be sure of a websites copyright and duplication or archiving policy, check their terms & conditions - usually you can find a link to this in the footer of their web page. If you are in doubt about the copyright status of a page, you can check with by direct messaging the team on the Decentralised Public Library Discord server. One tip is to look for: open data, open government data, creative commons-licensed content, and open access content.
- Dont archive peoples personal data, such as Facebook or LinkedIn profiles.
- You must use the wallet address you claimed from https://tokens.arweave.org to archive your web pages, otherwise we will not be able to reward you (this is to help avoid duplicate participation). If you have a problem with this, please contact me (arweave-india) on our Discord server.
- You must complete the required Google form before you begin to be eligible for campaign rewards.
- You must report your transactions in both the daily report Google form and also in the Bitcointalk.org thread to be eligible for rewards.
- You must be respectful to your fellow community members and campaign administrators.
- You must archive the web pages yourself. The use of multiple accounts is not permitted and may result in a ban.
- We reserve the right to disqualify any participant deemed to be acting in bad faith, acting against the spirit of the campaign, or those repeatedly breaking rules.
- We reserve the right to alter the campaign rules, and will update this post if changes occur.
- Do not archive duplicate content.
- Your report numbers should re-start at 1 when each new archiving period begins. For example, this new archiving period begins at 12:00 noon CEST on Wednesday the 7th of August 2019, so your report on Wednesday afternoon should be labelled as report 1 even if you have participated in previous archiving periods or rounds. This helps us a lot with making sure we get the correct rewards to you per archiving period.
For referring:
If you refer a friend and want to receive rewards for this, they must include your wallet address in their Google form submission when they register to participate. So, make sure you encourage them to submit your address when they sign up! Here is the link for you to share the registration form with a friend: https://forms.gle/UPV1x7YQ2Uip3GgFA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Well add to this list of FAQs as the campaign progresses, so feel free to ask any and all questions in this thread!
What type of content should I archive?
We recommend you archive primary sources (AKA original sources) only. For example: government statements or reports; tweets; parliamentary debates or proceedings; official original source press/media statements from individuals, governments, or companies; primary source proof of breaking news events; open access scientific proceedings or other open access publications about current events, etc.
If you read a news article about something you find interesting, dont archive the article itself, find the original source documents, perspectives, or statements the article is based on.
If you are in doubt about what you can and cant archive, join our Discord server and DM me your questions! My username is arweave-india and Ill be happy to help.
What type of content shouldnt I archive?
It is important that you do not archive copyrighted content, and that you only archive primary/original sources. For example, we recommend that you do not archive newspaper articles or most news websites, because their content is often both copyrighted and also a secondary source (read about what a secondary source is here). Content such as a Wikipedia page on History as an abstract concept is not sufficient to receive a reward.
It is important to only archive high quality content that meets the rules. We will be checking transactions, and if you have made an archiving transaction that breaks the rules, you will not be eligible for rewards or special prizes.
If you are in doubt about what you can and cant archive, join our Discord server and DM me your questions! My username is arweave-india and Ill be happy to help.
How can I check copyright on a web page?
Its your responsibility to check the copyright on a web page. If, during our checks, you are found to have archived copyrighted content, we will not be able to give you any rewards or prizes, so be careful!
You should check the terms and conditions or terms of use page of a website if you are unsure (you can usually find this in the footer of a webpage), it will detail what the site's copyright/intellectual property policies are. Often, websites that are sharing- and archiving-friendly will use a creative commons licence of some kind on their terms page, which usually means you can archive it without breaking copyright. Also, content released under open government licences, and open access licences are typically safe to archive.
Like I mentioned above, if you are in doubt, shoot me a DM (arweave-india) on our Discord server!
Can I archive pages in any language, or from any country?
Yes! Content does not have to be English-language. As with all archives or collections of human history, it's important to have a wide range of societies, people, and countries represented.
